Silence Is Communication
We tell ourselves that saying nothing is neutral. It never is. Silence is a message, carefully delivered, and everyone in the room receives it — usually more clearly than the words we did manage to say.
When someone speaks about harm and the response is a pause, a change of subject, a kind smile and no follow-up, that person learns something specific: this is not a place where that can be spoken. They rarely try twice.
I am not arguing for noise. Some silences are holy — the ones that hold a person while they find their words, the ones that refuse to fill a grief with commentary. The difference is whether the silence is offered or imposed.
So the question worth asking of any community is not whether it is peaceful. It is what its quiet is doing. Who does the silence protect? Who does it cost? And what would it take to say the true thing kindly, out loud, while it still matters?
