I write maps for the places we get lost.
People · Relationships · Community · Belonging · Grief · Faith · Human systems
Books and conversations about people, relationships, community, belonging, grief, faith, human systems and finding our way back to ourselves — the beautifully complicated business of being human.
Sometimes the map is a book. Sometimes it is a conversation. Sometimes it is simply language for something you already knew but couldn’t name. I bring a counsellor’s ear, a social scientist’s curiosity, a faith I hold with both hands open, a great deal of strong coffee, and no intention of becoming less weird.

Buy The Way Back to Yourself on AmazonAn area of inquiry
What happens between people — and what happens to us because of it.
I write about the systems humans create together: families, relationships, workplaces, churches, communities and institutions. How cultures form. How patterns repeat. How roles develop. How dysfunction sustains itself. How belonging shapes us. And just as importantly, what happens to the individual inside those systems — and how we find our way back to ourselves.
The System
How humans create collective environments — the cultures, norms and unwritten rules a group builds almost without meaning to.
The Pattern
How recurring relational and systemic patterns become recognisable — and what changes the moment you can name the shape.
The Loop
How roles, incompetence, dependency and protection can quietly keep dysfunction alive, and exhaust the people holding it together.
The Self
What happens to the individual inside relationships and systems — identity, dignity, discernment, and the long walk back to yourself.
The Building
How healthy communities are actually built — architecture, governance, leadership and care that protect dignity and let people flourish.

The books
Maps for the places we get lost: how we gather, what our cultures do to us, how we wound and repair, and how we might live together rather better than we do.

A new series
A fierce, tender, slightly irreverent series about the parts of us we were taught to quiet, tame, apologise for, spiritualise away, or make more acceptable — anger, grief, instinct, voice, creativity, courage and the sacred wildness of being fully alive.

A free book about the anger that arrives at 2am — and why it deserves an honest hearing rather than a polite one.

A handful of questions run through everything I write — half sociology, half lived observation, and rarely settled by the bottom of the coffee pot.
The culture a group builds almost by accident: inherited rules, unwritten norms, and who they quietly serve.
Who gets included, who gets missed, and where the real influence sits when nobody has named it out loud.
Relational dynamics that repeat across families, churches, charities and workplaces — and can be changed.
The losses that were never named, and what happens to people when trusted structures change.
Ordinary decisions that protect people, reflective safeguarding, and the repair that follows when they don't.
Faith, humour and eccentricity — because a culture that files down everybody's edges loses something it needed.

We tell ourselves that saying nothing is neutral. It never is. Silence is a message, and everyone in the room receives it.

Fitting in asks what you must become. Belonging asks what you already are. Most of us have spent years confusing the two.
VideoRecent
A short filmed reflection on the grief that has no funeral: the losses that were never named and so were never mourned.
The podcast
Odd little conversations about people, relationships, community, spirituality and being human.
Sometimes the map is a conversation.
Ponder This is where the writing gets talked out loud: half-formed thoughts, honest questions, the patterns I keep noticing in families, churches, workplaces and friendships — and the occasional tangent about God, coffee and why people are so wonderfully hard to tidy up.
